Five checks before you settle on a name
Begin with a clear core
Pick a word that already has meaning to you: a color, a place, a favorite idea, or a variation of your name. A short core word stays recognizable after you add a letter style or ornament. If people cannot read it aloud, simplify it.
Decide where it will live
A display name and a username may follow different rules. Display names often allow spaces and symbols; handles may allow only letters, digits, periods or underscores. Check the actual platform’s current rules before you commit.
Make it easy to remember
Try saying the name aloud, then write it from memory a few minutes later. Long strings of symbols, random digits and lookalike letters can make sharing difficult. One distinctive detail is usually enough.
Test the styled version
Paste your chosen name into the app where you plan to use it. Check mobile and desktop if both matter. Some characters will render as boxes, be rejected by a character limit, or appear differently in search. Keep the plain spelling as a backup.
Protect your privacy
A public nickname does not need your full legal name, birth date, school, or location. If you want a consistent identity across platforms, first check whether the name is already strongly associated with someone else.
