MAKE A CHOICE

Compare two names

Choose two researched names to see their references, sound, length, six-year totals and exact annual U.S. birth counts side by side.

The birth figures use the SSA’s 2020–2025 U.S. data. Different recorded sex categories have different denominators; this tool does not make a global rarity score.

What a six-year total can hide

Across 2020–2025, Luna had 46,161 recorded U.S. girl births and Aurora had 36,888. The total puts Luna ahead, but the final year in the series reverses their order. This is why a recent annual count and a six-year total answer different questions.

Same SSA girl category, exact spellings: two years from the six-year series
Birth yearLunaAurora
20207,8505,256
20256,0767,065

Luna’s recorded count changed from 7,850 to 6,076; Aurora’s changed from 5,256 to 7,065. These are birth counts in a named category, not yearly shares of all births or numbers of living people. They do not explain why the counts changed or predict future use. Compare all six rows in the tool above, and check the SSA annual national files for the underlying records.

What “common” means here

For the 13 researched names, we divide the recorded 2020–2025 name count by the 10,652,963 girl or 11,136,649 boy U.S. births in the same Social Security Administration table. The result is a share of recorded births in that period and sex category, not a worldwide duplicate-name rate, lifetime population estimate, or username availability check. Spelling variants and other sex categories are outside each displayed figure.

The SSA name table gives the counts and denominators; its background notes explain the data limits. Sound notes are approximate U.S. English readings and may differ by language, accent or family preference. Cultural imagery is offered as context, never as a prediction of personality or fate.

When a meaning is unknown

A newly coined handle can still be memorable without a documented origin. If we cannot verify one, the analyzer says so. It looks at visible length, letter patterns and readability, then suggests checks you can make in the actual app where the name will be used. See the naming guide for a fuller decision process.
